ILS Feb. Parent Newsletter

February 08, 2019

Dear ILS Families,

Hopefully everyone has had all the fun they wanted, deserved and needed and you have stayed safe in the snow from this past Sunday night.  It looks like we have more on its way over the weekend in case you wanted more!

According to Seattle Public Schools, snow make-up days will be June 21 and 24, making Monday, June 24, the new official last day of school for the year, unless closures go into next week.

ILS Annual Student Progress Reports
Our Creative Arts team has started working on their annual student progress reports which will be mailed out to families by late-March.  These are extremely fun for our team as they write and reflect on the individual growth and development of our very talented students.

2 Week-long Camps Remaining
It’s hard to believe, but we only have two camps remaining for the school year and these are week-long camps over President’s Day and Mid-Winter Break, February 18-22 and Spring Break, March 8-12.  If you haven’t signed up yet, Mr. Nick (our Camp Program Manager and Voice Instructor) has some really fun things planned for these.

Spring Showcase Dates Announced – Afterschool Students
Mark your calendars. We’ve locked in the dates for the Spring Showcase which will be presented at our ILS Locks location on June 1st.  Please see dates and times to the side.  As we get closer we will have more information to share about our theme, solo performances, and what to wear.

What we will be up to in February

Voice with Mr. Nick

In voice class, the month of February will mainly cover Asian Musical styles. We will continue our practice of sight-singing music and strengthening vocal skills, but have a special focus on the music of India, Korea, and Japan. We will discus North Indian Classical Music and its influence on Bollywood films, and conclude by covering contemporary musical styles of Korea and Japan.

Dance with Ms. Meowset

In dance, Ms. Meowset will be teaching ILS students all about Russian Folk Dance and Russian culture! Students will also enjoy a Musical Theatre class, and Yoga class within the month of February.

Art with Mr. Sam

In February, we are wrapping up our special effects makeup unit at all the sites, and looking ahead to the art show in May. Our big project in February is to construct plush moths for the art show.

Music with Ms. Candice

This month in Music with Ms. Candice we will be learning about Jazz Music and learning to identify notes of the Bass Clef. We will look at history, artists, instruments and importance of Jazz from the past up till today.

Drama with Ms. Taylor

This month the kids will be working in their groups to finish up their short stories. They will then be making their own unique book covers to top it all off. Towards the end of this month, when the stories are finished, the kids will learn how to adapt their stories into their own short films. This will be a fast paced month with plenty of opportunities for the kids to put their creative minds to work!
