Happy New Year ILS Families,

It’s a new year and we have lots of new things we are working on, including some fun new plans for Summer Camp.  “Summer” you’re thinking?  Yes, it feels pretty far off but Summer Camp registration in Seattle begins in February!

Summertime Dreaming
In addition to our Summer Camps open to all ages K-5th, this year we are trying something new and planning to run four camps specifically for older kids (ages 9-13).  We mention it now so that you will keep ILS in mind when you begin laying 2019 summer plans.

ILS Camp registration will begin February 1st when all camp details will be available.

Parent Portal
We have rolled out a new section on our website under News & Events for parents. Here you can access upcoming events, important dates, past newsletters, photos, video links and more.

ILS Winter Showcase VIDEO Available
Use the link above to access video on our Parent Portal of our Winter showcases from December.  These videos were filmed and produced by photographer and videographer, Jonathan H. Lee of Subtledream. They turned out really cute and will be fun to share with your extended families.

Via-DOOM (Viaduct Closure starts this Friday)
We are encouraging our families to plan ahead for the 3-week viaduct closure that begins Friday, January 11th.  During this time, traffic is expected to be worse than usual and we want to remind everyone about our late pick-up fees as we are not staffed after 6:00pm nightly. Please be sure your student is picked up no later than 6:00pm from After School Arts.

Thank you for continuing to be a part of our awesome community.  Here’s wishing everyone a great 2019!

What we will be up to in January

Voice with Mr. Nick

In Voice, we will continue our tour of Europe, finishing up by learning about Opera from the 1600s to now. We will then move on to more contemporary, Popular Music in Europe, with special emphasis on The Beatles and Queen.  As always, we will be continuing to develop healthy vocal habits and skills in sight-singing.

Here’s a link to a hilarious video Nick shared with the kids recently when teaching a lesson about Opera…it’s all about the goat! Click Here

Dance with Ms. Meowset

Ms. Meowset is teaching ILS students about Chinese Dragon and Lion dances. Students will learn to work in teams, and create their very own dragon or lion masks.

Art with Mr. Sam

Art Instructor, Mr. Sam is starting the planning for our big Art show in May. Students will learn about and create their own wood cut plants for the art show.

Music with Ms. Candice

This month we will learn about classical music and identifying notes of the treble clef. We will look at history, artists, instruments and composers from the past through today.

Drama with Ms. Taylor

This month we will be sharpening our storytelling skills. The kids will be working in groups to create their own narrative short stories. They will put their imaginations to work to come up with characters, settings, conflicts and resolutions. The stories that our students will be creating this month will be used in a special project we do in the month of February.
