ILS September Parent Newsletter

September 01, 2019

Dear ILS Families,

Happy first full week of back-to-school! We are happy to see so many of our friends return for another great year of our cultural, performing and creative arts classes during after school.  We have many new friends to welcome as well including several who are kindergartners staring with us today.

Welcome to our monthly email newsletters. Please keep an eye out for this monthly update which includes important dates, performance details, upcoming camp info, music and enrichment activities going on, as well as updates about what our students are learning each month.

September is a time for everyone to get to know their teachers, many who are new, as well as the other students attending ILS.  It’s a time when we begin to establish routines and students become familiar with our house rules as well as the daily/weekly schedules of classes.  By later in the month, students will be fully immersed in their Creative Arts learning each afternoon.  See below for pictures and info about our Creative Arts Instructors.

Daily Creative Centers
This year we will continue to have our afternoon creative centers which aim to provide students with a variety of creative arts activities that change each week to offer variety in their time at ILS.  From art projects to listening centers, creative writing to performance-based story telling and movement, technology stations to building and engineering – we have a lot of fun centers planned for students to engage in before and after our daily classes.  Think of it as free-time or choice time with a purpose!  Most of our creative centers are designed to engage students with activities that challenge their higher order thinking skills or invoke their creativity in fun, short sprints before and after their creative arts classes.

Creative Arts Classes
Monday through Thursday we present our specialty classes for Drama, Art, Dance, Music & Voice.  Check your student’s studio schedule for specific days.  Fridays are now reserved as Performance days.  This is going to allow for more creative collaboration and freedom for students to present or perform individual or group projects they are working on.  It will also allow us extra time to prepare for our twice annual performances. (See this year’s Performance Dates on the left side of this email).

Important Studio Reminders:

  1. Please pack an afternoon snack (nut-free) each day. Students are hungry after school.
  2. Pack a water bottle with your child’s name on it which can be left here in their cubbie.
  3. Don’t forget to call or email your site by Noon each day, if your student will be absent.
  4. Creative Arts Classes run daily between 3:30-5:00.  If you are picking up your student during this time, we ask you to help them quietly gather their belongings so we don’t disturb the other students or teaching staff.  If you need help, ask one of our assistants!
  5. Remove all student belongings at the end of each week so that we can thoroughly clean the studios and start fresh the next week.  We do not encourage toys or allow trading of cards or toys at ILS.

School-year Camps
All of our 2019-2020 School year camps (updated link) have been posted on our website where you can get more information and register.  If you have questions, please email our Business Office at info@ilskids.com.  Space is limited and camps tend to fill up quickly, so we encourage early enrollment.  ILS families also enjoy an enrollment discount when enrolling 5-days or more prior to the start of a camp.

We look forward to a fun year ahead and encourage you to let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Your friends and teachers at Illumination Learning Studio!

Looking for a fun cultural experience for the whole family?  Check our NW Folklife’s Seattle Children’s Festival – September 21-22 at the Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion.

For the past couple of years, ILS Students were invited to create art for the ‘Colors of Peace’ celebration  sponsored by Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run (www.peacerun.org).  Peace Run Italy started ‘Colors’ in 2017 with an exhibit around the Coliseum in Rome which included kid’s peace art from over 40 countries, with over 7,000 pieces collected and put on display.

Seattle has joined Color’s of Peace this year with it’s exhibit at NW Folklife later this month – the first in the world outside Rome.  This year’s event coincides with the annual event in Rome that celebrates the United Nations Day of Peace.  Original artwork from Illumination Learning Studio students joins the collection in Rome to become a part of their permanent collection.

An art booth at NW Folklife will be set up in the Fisher Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm so kids can create new art for peace.   This year’s UN Day of Peace theme is “Climate Action for Peace”
